about

Jared Both performed the Townes Van Zant song, “If I Need You”, at the memorial of a woman who died on the street in Hamilton, a few years ago. Thinking about the need for people to stay connected to others, he wrote and recorded this response song: “Carry Me”. A subtle and moving examination of his life as a pastor and father, the song expands questions and requests made by his children, into a larger examination of our role in helping other people. (Steacy Easton)

lyrics

She said:
Carry me, when I can no longer stand
Hold me, when I feel afraid
Be near to me, I need to know what's going on
Help me, I need you here with me

My girls are growing up
and they're making cakes in the mud
they are riding their own bikes
sailing through the neighbourhood
all of a sudden I see her stop
she's callin out my name:
help me, I need you here with me

My girls gotta a way
of changing all the rules we made
dad don't come here yet,
I haven't got a hiding place
but suddenly I see her stop
she's calln' out my name
help me, I need you here with me

We all have a time
when we feel a little scared
we fall down
and we need someone to lend a hand
it's okay to call a friend
and say to them
help me, I need you here with me.

Times have changed
we're no longer on our own
we have these constant
responsiblities
I'm learning to be ready
always ready to respond
Just call me
and I'll be coming near to you
